Temperature Measurement Best Practice Tutorial

FIERF sponsored study at Marquette University, Justin I. Kurk and Professor Joseph Domblesky

Analysis of Individual Die Tonnage Using Multiple Tonnage Sensors for Multiple Operation Forging Processes

Qingyu Yang, Qiang Li and Judy Jin, Industrial and Operations Engineering Department, University of Michigan. This FIERF Graduate Fellowship Grant, with HHI Forging Operation Royal Oak and OG Technologies as industry partners, focused on advancing the usage of tonnage signals not only for press force monitoring, but by developing signal characteristics to detect variations in tonnage and correlate these to process and quality issues. The estimation of the source signals offers efficient monitoring and quality assessment capabilities of individual stations.

Prediction and Elimination of Fracture in Hot Forging

FIERF Sponsored Research
The research was performed by Siddharth Kishore, Graduate Research Associate - Xi Yang, Graduate Research Associate, Arturo reyes-Osorio – Visiting Scholar and Taylan Altan, Professor and Director of the Engineering Research Center for net Shape Manufacturing at the Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio

Simulation Of Centerline Defect Closure In Open Die Forging

Jie Zhou, Prof. Philip Nash
Illinois Institute of Technology , Department Of Mechanical, Materials And Aerospace Engineering
This project refers to an industrial case concerning large H13 steel ingots forged in A. Finkl and Sons Company for which finite element method was adopted to enable a defect closure study.

Characterization of Internal Defects in Open Die Forging

Alisha Tremaine, C.J. Van Tyne, FIERF Professor, Colorado School of Mines

Dimensional Surface Inspection of Hot Forgings

Development of device to inspect hot forgings as they exit the press or hammer to increase machine utilization, reduce scrap and production costs. Prototype devices have been tested at several forging companies.
