Washington Update from NAM

The President will sign yet another Executive Order. This one will mandate that all federal contractors, subcontractors and lower-tiered subcontractors provide "one hour of paid sick time for every 30 hours worked." The paid sick leave may be used for illness or for other reasons similar to those in the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). The sick time may be carried over to the next year and will impact approximately 300,000 workers.

You may notice this initiative is nearly identical as the "The Healthy Families Act," which, after failing last year, has been reintroduced in both the House and the Senate by Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) and Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT).  These bills have little to no chance of moving, so the Administration is giving it life through an Executive Order on federal contractors. The Department of Labor will issue regulations by September 30, 2016 to be effective by January 1, 2017.
